The author made many qualified arguments in his comparisons of Socialism and Capitalism but the style of writing was almost painful to read. Here is a typical sentence:In so doing, two separate but related claims will be analyzed: (1) the claim made in particular by socialists of the Marxist and the social-democratic camp, and to a lesser degree also by the conservatives, that a principled case in favor of socialism can be made because of the moral value of its principles and, mutatis mutandis, that capitalism cannot be defended morally; and (2) the claim of empiricist socialism that normative statements ("should" or "ought" statements -- since they neither solely relate to facts, nor simply state a verbal definition, and thus are neither empirical nor analytical statements -- are not really statements at all, at least not statements that one could call "cognitive" in the widest of all senses, but rather mere "verbal expressions" used to express or arouse feelings (such as "Wow" or "grrrr").
You can learn a lot just by reading the first two chapters abut the difference between capitalism and socialism. I like its clear explanation of property, property rights, and differences in acquiring property through contracts or aggression. It also explains the clear differences between the "Russian" style socialism and the socialism practiced in the western socialists countries. One of the interesting descriptions is the effect that socialism has on people's psyche making it difficult to return back to capitalistic society.Should be a required reading for the high school students.
Excellent book. Hoppe's review of why free market capitalism is superior to socialism is exhaustive. If you haven't been exposed to the Austrian Theory of economics, this book is a good place to start. The bonus is that you will have a better understanding why the economy collapsing.
This is not an easy read, but those who stick with it will get a thorough education in why capitalism, and only capitalism, will produce the societal benefits that most of us want. Solid reasoning at its finest.
A masterpiece that expands your mind, fires up your intellectual curiosity, and exposes the guts and gore of socialism in a truly paradigm-altering way. Essential reading for any libertarian. Kryptonite to socialists, who won't dare read it.
Every kid whose mind is getting poisoned by left-wing radical college professors should read this so he/she will understand how the world really works and what works best.
So clear and consistent. The ultimate case for freedom is in this book.
One of the greatest books of all time.
